Live! On Stage! Gates and Jobs!
June 3rd, 2007One of my favorite blogs is Coding Horror, run by Jeff Atwood, and on Friday he alerted his readership to a pretty remarkable set of video streams from an interview that took place last Thursday. In an odd way, I chose a good time to post my Book Report on Accidental Empires, because this interview last week conducted by the good people over at D featured Bill Gates and Steve Jobs on the same stage in front of a live audience for the first time since a pre-Mac launch event in 1983 covering many of the same topics that are in that book.
The interview has a prologue and 7 sections to it and you owe it to yourself to watch at least part of it. The prologue gives some history between the two (including a whole lot of bad 80s hair) that sets up the first segment well. The two discuss the love-hate relationship their two companies had over the years and both seem extremely comfortable with how things have turned out.
There are lots of undertones of bridge burning and being creative with constraints that early machines had that are just interesting to watch. Plus, I’m pretty sure Gates is wearing makeup.

Are you kidding me? Take a look at my picture. If I’m not a genuine, bona fide nerd I’m not sure who is. I'm currently employed as the Marketing and Internet Platform Solutions, Portals and Applications Chief Architect at Hewlett Packard (try saying that 5 times fast) and write here about career best practices for techies. Why? Because I wish I'd had this kind of free advice earlier in my own career and now I'm trying to "pay it forward". See more in

I watched the entire presentation. I’m certain I qualify as a nerd for being fascinated watching these two and being impressed by their individual genius.
And Thanks! for the help with my home page blog links. I’ve installed them with little fanfare and like this look much better.
